Full service marketing agency or Jack of all trades?

I recently heard someone referring to a full service marketing agency as being like a “jack of all trades”.

I happen to completely disagree and ill explain why in the context of social media marketing:

Social media uses the following marketing tools and sites:

  • Blog sites
  • Websites
  • Social media sites
  • Email marketing
  • Video marketing
  • SEM/Copyrighting
  • Digital Advertising

All of which can be integrated as part of the marketing mix.

To enable sharing across social networking, online communities and websites, you need content (information), whether that is in a form of a newsletter, blog, article or a web page for that matter, or general idea posts.

That content is then delivered through the various social media mediums;

When creating a post you want to share, sometimes you need to include a URL link to where the original source is hosted i.e. a website. So that when someone clicks on the link, it directs them to that web page you want to share with the reader.

Now, let’s say you take an digital marketing agency that offers a full service as an example, assuming they offer SEO website design, including social media sharing tools and buttons, blog integration, newsletter sign up forms, and they can create emails with social media sharing and interacting capabilities, and they can create videos for SEO that can be embedded on a Youtube channel and/or website, along with copyrighting services such as article writing, whitepapers and brochures, and they offer a PPC service for Google advertising to be more visible on the internet and get instant traffic to their site, and they can design an advertising banner for promoting their brand online, along with the essential social media strategy and management.

Then that digital marketing agency not only adds value to the customer buying experience, but it also generates results for the client as part of the overall online marketing strategy.

Is it not then more cost effective and efficient to use that one agency, rather than a number of different specialist agencies? Surely it prevents them from having to explain their needs more over? In turn, isn’t that better management of time and money?

My thoughts are; any agencies offering a full service, is not a jack of all trades, but a seamless product with systems in place, providing a solution that generates ongoing results for the client, because (a) they thought out the process, (b) they designed it, (c) they implemented it (d) they delivered, (e) they managed it and finally, they know exactly how that business operates.
